Business Continuity

Business Continuity standards were originally published as BS 25999 in two parts, but that has all changed. The International & British Standards Organisations have now released a new revisions under new numbers:

  • BS ISO 22301:2019 Security and resilience. Business continuity management systems. Requirements.
  • BS ISO 22313:2020 Security and resilience. Business continuity management systems. Guidance.

BS ISO 22301 replaces the original British Standard BS 25999-2 'Part 2" and as with all international standards, achieving certification to this new standard means recognition globally. In common with other management systems’ standards, BS ISO 22301 is based on the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ model that seeks to continually improve the effectiveness of an organization through proficient planning, implementation, supervision, review and maintenance of a Business Continuity Management (BCM) System.

The guidance document for ISO 22301 provides a more intuitive framework to those pursuing business continuity best practice. It is a key milestone to support the uptake and implementation of effective BCM worldwide. BS ISO 22313 provides additional information to BS ISO 22301 helping the reader better understand what good BCM looks like and how it can be implemented in their organisations. These standards provide clear, jargon-free material for all organisations that want to establish or improve their resilience.
